The County Upper Basketball

Academy Experience

County Upper Basketball Academy offers a unique opportunity to all student-athletes who want to achieve in the class room and on the basketball court. We offer talented basketball players from all over the Eastern region the opportunity of combining an excellent academic programme with an elite level of basketball coaching. We are also the only Basketball Academy in the East of England which offers all Academy players a high performance athlete support service.

This athlete support service is unique at this level, in that the procedures adopted are the same as used with athletes who are on the World Class Performance Plan and part of Team GB for a variety of sports. The Athlete Support Service group has had over 10 years of experience working with elite athletes and teams from a variety of sports and backgrounds, including cycling, track and field, rowing, cricket, swimming, football, rugby, triathlon, orienteering, hockey and water skiing.

Whatever goals or aspirations a player may have in basketball, our programme gives an opportunity to maximize their abilities, both on the court and in the class room. The Academy will achieve this by focusing on the following four main areas of development:

1)      Technical:

All academy players will have a minimum of 3 individuals throughout the academic week. During these individuals the coaching staff will focus on the development of the player’s fundamentals, plus run drills which will combine and improve a player’s decision making ability with fundamental skills.

2)      Tactical:

All Academy players will have four team practices per week. During these team practices the coaching staff will run drills that will teach how to work as a team, plus how to be an effective team member. The coaching staff will use a variety of drills to help achieve this, including recognising advantages in the game and using/taking away spaces.

3)      Mental:

Through our high performance athlete support service, we will have sports psychologists working with Academy players. This support will be looking to strengthen Academy players confidence, plus pick up coping strategies for on and off the court stressors which might affect an athlete’s performance or development.

4)      Physical:

Through our high performance athlete support service, we are able to provide an International level of strength and conditioning, speed & quickness and nutrition support to all Academy players. We are the only basketball Academy in the East of England which offers such a programme.
