Brightlingsea, Essex — County Upper Basketball Academy battled tough against the EBL D2 Colchester Men’s team, but fell short in a 63 – 37 loss to the Hornets Tuesday night.
It was the first ever game for the Academy, which is also competing in the National Schools Academies and VI form competition for the first time.
The two teams had traded baskets for the first 8 minutes, but it was a 4 – 0 run at the end of the first quarter gave the Hornets a 16 – 10 lead. The hornets opened the second quarter with a 6 – 0 run to extended their lead to 12 points. For the remainder of the second quarter both teams traded baskets, County Upper went into half time down 22 – 34. Turnovers were County Uppers Achilles heel in the first half as the team committed 11.
Both teams opened up the second half trading baskets until the Hornets went on a 10 – 2 run to finish the 3rd quarter, this gave the Hornets a 49 – 31 lead.
In the 4th quarter the Hornets went on another 11 – 2 run at the end of the quarter, which gave the Hornets a 60 – 35 lead.
Despite the endless offensive efforts by County Upper, the Hornets always had an answer for their scores and didn’t let County Upper get into the game.
J. Dawson finished the evening leading County Upper in scoring with 10 points; he was also supported by B. Warden (9), M. Warner (8), B. Beddow (2), A. Wright (2), N. O’leary (2), G. Bangs (2), and J. Sheward (2),
County Upper will look to get in the win column tomorrow night when the team travels Culford, to play the Bury Bulldogs men’s team.
